Barrel length is one of the most consequential decisions in any AR-15 or AR-9 build — yet it's also one of the most misunderstood. YouTube comment sections are full of confident-sounding advice that doesn't hold up in the real world. Whether you're building a home defense gun, a competition rifle, a hunting carbine, or a truck gun, the "best" barrel length changes dramatically based on your use case.

Why Barrel Length Matters
Barrel length affects four core variables in any AR platform:
1. Muzzle Velocity: Longer barrels give propellant gases more time to act on the bullet, increasing velocity. Every inch of AR-15 barrel adds roughly 20–25 fps with 5.56mm ammunition. This directly impacts effective range, terminal ballistics, and barrier penetration.
2. Maneuverability: Overall length (OAL) determines how the rifle handles in tight spaces — vehicle interiors, hallways, around barricades. A 10.5" barrel AR is dramatically easier to move through a doorway than a 20" rifle.
3. Sound Signature: Shorter barrels produce more muzzle blast and concussion — especially indoors. This is a serious consideration for home defense. An AR-9 with a 16" barrel is significantly quieter than a 7.5" AR-15 from an unsuppressed standpoint.
4. Reliability: Gas-operated ARs are tuned for specific pressure curves. Very short barrels can cause over-gassing, short-stroking, and extraction failures unless the rifle is properly tuned with an adjustable gas block and appropriate buffer system.
AR-15 Barrel Lengths: What You Need to Know
7.5" — The Ultra-Short Pistol Build
The 7.5" barrel is the most compact AR-15 configuration available. It's extremely popular in pistol-format builds and is commonly chambered in 5.56 or 300 Blackout. In 5.56, velocity at this length drops to roughly 2,400–2,600 fps — enough to function, but reliability and terminal performance are inconsistent with standard ball ammunition. In 300 Blackout, the 7.5" barrel is practically purpose-built, especially with subsonic suppressed loads. Gas system tuning is critical at this length.
10.5" — The CQB Sweet Spot
The 10.5" barrel has become the de facto standard for military and law enforcement close-quarters configurations. With quality 5.56 defensive loads (like Hornady 75gr TAP or Federal Tactical Bonded), terminal performance is reliable out to 100 yards. Velocity runs 2,650–2,800 fps. Manageable, proven, and excellent with a suppressor. Requires a pistol brace or SBR stamp. Gas timing and buffer weight matter significantly here.
11.5" — The Military Split
The 11.5" barrel threads the needle between 10.5" and 14.5". Made famous by the Mk18 CQBR used by SOCOM, this length provides a marginal velocity improvement over 10.5" while retaining a compact profile. Excellent performer in quality builds; less forgiving of cheap components. If you're building to Mk18 spec, this is your length.
16" — The Standard Carbine
Sixteen inches is the legal minimum barrel length for a rifle-configured AR-15 without NFA paperwork. For this reason alone, it's the single most popular AR-15 barrel length in civilian hands. Velocity is excellent (2,900–3,050 fps), reliability is superb, and the gun runs virtually any ammunition without issues. The 16" carbine is the benchmark everything else is measured against. For most people building their first or only AR-15, 16 inches is the correct answer.
18" — The Mid-Range Precision Barrel
The 18" barrel is the choice of competitive shooters in PRS-style carbine events and hunters who need more reach. Velocity climbs to 3,000–3,100 fps. The rifle becomes better suited for DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) roles. Paired with a mid-length or rifle-length gas system, dwell time is excellent and the gun is exceptionally soft-shooting. The tradeoff is increased length and weight.
20" — The Original AR / Long-Range Specialist
The 20" barrel is what Eugene Stoner originally designed the AR-15 around, and the M16A4 still runs it for a reason. Velocity peaks at 3,100–3,200 fps, maximizing the ballistic performance of 5.56 and enabling longer effective engagement ranges. The full-length rifle gas system provides the softest-shooting, most reliable operation of any AR configuration. It's not tactical-handy, but for long-range work, hunting, and service rifle competition, a 20" barrel is hard to beat.
AR-9 Barrel Lengths: 9mm Is Different
The AR-9 operates on blowback or roller-delayed mechanics, not direct impingement gas operation. This fundamentally changes how barrel length affects performance. 9mm reaches its full velocity in a much shorter barrel than rifle calibers — most of the propellant burns out by 8–10 inches. After that, you're mostly just adding weight and length.
4" – 6" — Compact Pistol Build Territory
Sub-6" AR-9 builds are extremely compact and popular in the pistol market. They're loud, snappy, and send 9mm downrange at 1,050–1,150 fps — which is roughly equivalent to a full-size semi-auto pistol. Very capable for home defense in 4"–5" configurations if you understand the limitations.
8" – 10" — The AR-9 Home Defense / Range Gun Ideal
This is arguably the sweet spot for the AR-9. An 8"–10" barrel provides most of 9mm's available velocity (~1,200–1,350 fps), excellent maneuverability, manageable blast, and a familiar AR manual of arms. Suppressor-ready at this length with a Nielsen device. For home defense, the AR-9 in this barrel range is genuinely superior to many rifle options — lower overpenetration risk, softer recoil, and still enough power with modern 147gr +P loads.
16" — The Rifle-Length AR-9
A 16" AR-9 is the standard configuration for those who want to avoid NFA paperwork. Velocity tops out around 1,500 fps — a notable jump over shorter barrels, especially with lighter 115gr loads. The 16" carbine is the best AR-9 option for those who want maximum velocity, competition use, or suppressor hosts where added length is tolerable. It also runs suppressed with exceptional consistency.

Home Defense
Maneuverability indoors is paramount. AR-9 is increasingly preferred for reduced overpenetration.
Competition
3-Gun and PRS favor 16". Service rifle (NRA/CMP) requires 20". AR-9 excels in USPSA PCC.

Velocity and ballistic coefficient matter at distance. 18"–20" in .223 Wylde or 6.8 SPC for medium game.

Legal Considerations: SBR, NFA & Pistol Builds
Federal law under the National Firearms Act (NFA) regulates short-barreled rifles. Here's what you need to know:
What is an SBR? Any firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder (i.e., with a stock) that has a rifle barrel under 16" or an overall length under 26". SBRs require a $200 tax stamp, ATF Form 1 (build) or Form 4 (transfer), registration, and a waiting period that typically runs several months.
Pistol Builds: AR-pattern firearms configured without a stock — typically with a pistol brace — have historically been classified as "pistols" and not subject to SBR regulations. However, ATF rules in this area have seen significant regulatory activity. Always verify current ATF guidance before purchasing components.
The 14.5" Pin-and-Weld Solution: A 14.5" barrel with a muzzle device permanently attached (pin-and-welded) to achieve a minimum 16" overall barrel length is a common workaround that creates a legally compliant rifle without NFA paperwork.
