Subsonic Ammo Explained: Hunting Performance, AR Reliability, and When It's Worth It

If you've spent any time around suppressors or quiet range days, you've heard the term "subsonic ammo" thrown around like it's a magic bullet for stealth. It isn't. Subsonic ammunition solves one specific problem — the sonic crack of a bullet breaking the sound barrier — and it comes with real tradeoffs in energy, trajectory, and reliability that every shooter should understand before loading a magazine with it.

This guide breaks down what subsonic ammo actually is, whether it holds up for hunting, and why so many AR-platform rifles choke on it without modification.

What Makes Ammo "Subsonic"?

Sound travels at roughly 1,125 feet per second (fps) at sea level under standard conditions. Any bullet traveling slower than that stays below the sound barrier and never produces the sharp "crack" associated with supersonic rounds. Subsonic ammunition is loaded specifically to keep muzzle velocity under that threshold — typically in the 1,000–1,050 fps range to leave a safety margin as the round decelerates downrange or as environmental conditions shift.

The appeal is simple: pair subsonic ammo with a suppressor, and the only sound you hear is the mechanical cycling of the action itself. No crack, no bark — just a soft thump. That's a huge deal for hearing protection, reduced disturbance on hunting land, and shooting comfort during extended range sessions.

But quiet doesn't mean weak, and it definitely doesn't mean "better" across the board.

Hunting Effectiveness: Where Subsonic Ammo Shines (and Where It Falls Short)

The Case For It

Subsonic loads can be genuinely effective for hunting in the right circumstances:

  • Short-range, suppressed hog and predator control. Ranches running suppressed .300 Blackout or similar cartridges use subsonic loads to keep noise down when hunting at night or near livestock and neighbors.
  • Small game and pest control. Subsonic .22LR is a longtime favorite for squirrel, rabbit, and varmint hunting where minimal noise matters and shot distances are short.
  • Heavy-for-caliber bullets retain energy better than you'd expect. Cartridges like .300 Blackout subsonic typically push 190–220 grain bullets. That extra mass helps offset the velocity loss, delivering respectable terminal performance inside 100 yards.

The Case Against It

Where subsonic ammo struggles is in almost every scenario outside its narrow window:

  • Limited effective range. Most subsonic loads lose meaningful terminal performance beyond 100–125 yards. The lower velocity means less energy transfer and a bullet that's more prone to underperforming on medium and large game at distance.
  • Steep trajectory drop. Subsonic rounds arc dramatically compared to their supersonic counterparts. Without careful zeroing and holdover practice, misjudging distance by even 20-30 yards can mean a poor hit.
  • Expansion problems. Many hunting bullets rely on velocity to reliably expand on impact. Drop below that velocity threshold, and some projectiles fail to mushroom properly, resulting in a narrow wound channel and reduced stopping power — a serious ethical concern for hunters who prioritize quick, humane kills.
  • Not a fit for larger game. Deer-sized game and larger generally call for more energy than most subsonic loads can reliably deliver, especially past close range. Hunters pursuing anything beyond smaller hogs or predators at modest distances should stick with supersonic ammunition matched to their quarry.

Bottom line: subsonic ammo is a specialty tool for close-range, noise-sensitive hunting situations — not a universal replacement for standard hunting loads. Know your cartridge's specific ballistics and stay within its effective range.

Will Subsonic Ammo Cycle in an AR Platform?

This is where a lot of new shooters get tripped up. The short answer: it depends entirely on the rifle's gas system, not just the ammo.

The Core Problem

AR-15 and AR-10 platforms are gas-operated. A portion of the propellant gas is bled off through a port in the barrel to cycle the bolt carrier group. Subsonic ammunition produces significantly less pressure and gas volume than standard supersonic loads, which means many AR builds — especially those set up for full-power .223/5.56 — simply don't generate enough gas to reliably cycle the action with subsonic rounds.

Symptoms of an AR that can't handle subsonic ammo include:

  • Failure to eject (the classic "stovepipe")
  • Failure to feed the next round
  • Short-stroking, where the bolt carrier doesn't travel far enough to strip a new round from the magazine
  • The bolt failing to lock back on an empty magazine

What Actually Cycles Reliably

  • .300 Blackout is purpose-built for this. Unlike .223/5.56, .300 Blackout was designed from the ground up to run both supersonic and subsonic loads in the same platform without swapping parts, provided the rifle has an appropriately sized gas port. Most dedicated .300 BLK uppers, especially shorter-barreled pistol and SBR configurations, cycle subsonic ammo reliably out of the box. That said, an adjustable gas block is still a smart addition even on a dedicated .300 BLK build — bullet weights in this cartridge vary widely, from 110-grain supersonic loads up to 220-grain subsonic loads, and different suppressors add their own variance in back-pressure. An adjustable gas block lets you fine-tune the system for whatever combination of ammo and can you're running, rather than hoping a fixed gas port splits the difference well enough.
  • Suppressed setups usually help, but not always. Adding a suppressor increases back-pressure in the gas system, which often provides just enough extra push to cycle subsonic loads that would otherwise fail to run in an unsuppressed rifle. That said, back-pressure is a double-edged sword — on some builds, especially those already running on the gassier side, the added pressure can cause over-cycling issues like excessive bolt bounce, increased felt recoil, or extra blowback into the receiver, which can hurt reliability rather than help it. The right outcome depends on the specific gas system and suppressor combination, so it's worth testing before assuming a can will fix your cycling problems.
  • Adjustable gas blocks are the fix for everything else. If you're running subsonic ammo in a caliber or upper that wasn't specifically designed for it, an adjustable gas block lets you dial in more gas flow to compensate for the lower pressure. This is the single most effective upgrade for shooters who want reliable subsonic cycling without changing calibers.
  • .223/5.56 subsonic is generally a poor match for ARs. Standard 5.56 gas systems are tuned around supersonic pressures, and subsonic 5.56 loads frequently fail to cycle without significant gas system modification. Most shooters who want a subsonic AR experience are better served by .300 Blackout than trying to force 5.56 to run slow.
  • AR-10 platform rifles face an even bigger uphill battle. The larger, heavier bolt carrier group and stiffer recoil spring in AR-10 platforms require considerably more gas energy to cycle than an AR-15 action. In practice, this means almost no standard AR-10 cartridge — including .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and similar chamberings — will reliably cycle subsonic ammunition, even with an adjustable gas block or a suppressor adding back-pressure. The gas simply isn't there. The one notable exception is 8.6 Blackout, a cartridge purpose-built around subsonic performance in an AR-10 sized action, engineered specifically to generate enough gas at subsonic velocities to run the heavier bolt carrier reliably. Outside of 8.6 Blackout, subsonic AR-10 shooting isn't a matter of tuning your gas system — it's largely a non-starter.

The Bolt-Action Workaround

If cycling reliability is a dealbreaker and you're not willing to modify the gas system, a bolt-action or single-shot platform sidesteps the entire issue — you're manually cycling the action regardless of how much gas the round produces. This is why many hunters who want maximum subsonic quietness lean toward bolt guns for that first, most critical shot.
