1. Full Metal Jacket (FMJ)

Full metal jacket bullets consist of a soft lead core wrapped almost entirely in a harder metal jacket, typically copper or a copper alloy. The jacket covers the sides and nose of the bullet, leaving only the base exposed.

2. Armor Piercing (AP)

Armor piercing bullets are built to defeat hardened barriers. Instead of a lead core, they typically use a hardened steel, tungsten, or tungsten-carbide penetrator core, sometimes wrapped in a softer jacket to protect rifling as the round travels down the barrel.

Key characteristics:

  • Hardened penetrator core designed to punch through steel, light armor, or barriers
  • Minimal deformation on impact, since the core is engineered to hold its shape

3. Hollow Point (HP)

4. Soft Point (SP)

Soft point bullets are a middle ground between FMJ and hollow point. The jacket covers the sides of the bullet but leaves the lead core exposed at the tip.

Key characteristics:

  • Controlled expansion — the exposed lead nose flattens and mushrooms on impact, but generally less aggressively than a hollow point
  • Retains more weight than many hollow points, which supports deeper, more controlled penetration
  • Historically one of the most popular choices for big-game hunting because it balances expansion with penetration

Soft points come in two construction families that matter more than people realize:

  • Standard soft points — the lead core sits in the jacket, sometimes with a mechanical taper or crimp (like Remington's Core-Lokt) to help hold it in place. These are budget-friendly, but the core and jacket can still separate on impact, especially against bone.
  • Bonded soft points — the core is chemically or electro-chemically fused to the jacket, not just mechanically held. This keeps the bullet together as it penetrates, giving more consistent weight retention and deeper, more predictable penetration — at a higher price point.

Best for: Big game hunting, especially medium to large game where reliable penetration through muscle and bone matters as much as expansion. Standard soft points work well on deer-sized game at typical ranges; bonded soft points earn their keep on tougher animals like elk or when shots may hit heavy bone.

5. Ballistic Tip / Polymer Tip Bullets

Ballistic tip (also called polymer tip) bullets add a pointed polymer insert to the nose of what is otherwise a hollow point or soft point-style bullet. That polymer tip serves two purposes: it improves the bullet's aerodynamic profile (better ballistic coefficient, flatter trajectory, less wind drift) and it acts as a wedge that initiates expansion on impact by driving into the hollow cavity beneath it.

As with soft points, bonding separates budget polymer tips from premium ones. Polymer tips also split by intended game size:

  • Big-game vs. varmint polymer tips — big-game designs (e.g., Hornady SST) use a thicker jacket with an InterLock-style ring to control expansion and penetrate deeper, while varmint designs (e.g., Hornady V-MAX) use a thin jacket built for violent fragmentation and aren't meant for deer-sized game.

  • Standard (non-bonded) polymer tip bullets — a thin jacket, lead core, and polymer tip. Expands quickly and affordably, but the core can separate from the jacket, capping how far it should be pushed on tougher, larger animals.

  • Bonded polymer tip bullets — the lead core is chemically or electro-chemically fused to the jacket (e.g., Nosler AccuBond, Swift Scirocco, Norma BondStrike). This slows expansion, keeps the bullet together through bone and heavy muscle, and retains significantly more weight — built for larger, tougher game where deep penetration alongside expansion is critical.

  • Partition-style polymer tips — use an internal jacket wall or partitioned core (bonded or not) to physically separate the front and rear of the bullet, so the front expands while the rear stays intact for continued penetration.

  • Long-range match polymer tips — prioritize a high ballistic coefficient and consistent flight over aggressive expansion. Bonding is largely irrelevant here since dramatic expansion isn't the design goal — these are chosen for accuracy at distance, not terminal performance.

Best for: Hunters and long-range shooters who want flatter trajectories, reduced wind drift, and reliable expansion. Match the construction to the game: non-bonded polymer tips suit varmint and predator hunting, while bonded or partition-style versions are better suited to elk-sized or larger game where you need the bullet to hold together.
